How Texas calculates child support

Texas uses a net resources method under Family Code §154. The OAG's current calculator uses 2026 tax-chart parameters. This estimate subtracts estimated federal income, Social Security, and Medicare taxes, applies the $11,700/month cap, then applies the guideline percentage. These percentages apply when net resources are at least $1,000 per month:

For net resources below $1,000 per month, the OAG calculator uses a special reduced guideline table. If the obligor has other children, the multiple-family adjustment under §154.129 changes the percentage. This form counts “6 or more” children before the court as 6 and “5 or more” other children as 5 for that estimate. It does not include all possible deductions, such as qualifying child health or dental insurance costs and union dues. See the Texas Family Code, Chapter 154 and the Texas OAG monthly calculator.
